The bars are heated, folded repeatedly to create 384 layers, and then acid-etched to reveal the unique, beautiful patterns characteristic of Damascus steel. The acid burn highlights the layers with nickel turning a satin color and the high carbon steel becoming blackish gray. After crafting, the handles are high polished and the blade edges are sharpened to perfection, with the acid burned edges turning satin.
